Bad Teacher (2011)

Written by Gene Stupnitsky, Lee Eisenberg
Directed by Jake Kasdan
Starring Cameron Diaz, Justin Timberlake & Lucy Punch

This movie is exactly what it looks like from the trailer. It's joke after joke about ditzy blonde Diaz trying to get what she wants… a man… a rich man… a stupid rich man...

The film has a certain charm to it. It’s hard to really take a deep look at this film because of the whimsical subject matter and embarrassingly relatable motivations. The characters in their entirety are bland and lifeless and the all-star cast makes for a great back drop for, what is, empty dialoge. The film is a comedy even thought some jokes fall flat. There are moments that just don’t play at all and yet are still in the movie.

The jokes roll out at a good pace and lots of them are funny. This is a comedy that you can easily laugh at. Diaz is becoming quite the joker. Jason Segel plays the most generous and warm character I have ever seen him play. Timberlake plays the rich bachelor, love interest and Punch is the woman in her way.

Bottom 5 rating. Bad teacher doesn’t break any rules or try to be something its not. It’s a rental for the whimsical movie-goer.

The Avengers (2012)

Written by Joss Whedon
Directed by Joss Whedon
Starring Mark Ruffalo, Robert Downey Jr. & Chris Hemsworth

"It was kray kray!!!"
- Mr. E Legit

This is a movie that has crazy hype and deserves it. This is a movie if ever there was one. The film industry only produces one of these every couple of years.  Now there are tons of nerds out there who will love or hate this movie for a thousand reasons. And I’m one of them. ;-)

Reasons to hate this movie: Captain America is worthless in this movie. That sad part about having awesome powers like invincibility like Thor or invincibility like the Hulk, or having invincible body armor like Iron man, … is you end up out shining the Captain. Captain America has almost nothing to contribute in this movie. He does very little and has very little effect. Now this is hard to take considering the Captain America movie was by far the best of the prequels to The Avengers.

Reasons to love this movie: Besides the fact that three of the super hero avengers are invincible and kick ass, this movie has lots of fun and excitement. They battle Loci  an immortal who has an alien army attacking earth as their first step in taking over the universe.

Whedon directs the hell out of this movie likes crazy. I was impressed with almost everything aesthetically as well as the art direction. I was particularly impressed with the character of the hulk played by Mark Ruffalo. Ruffalo plays up the dark side of the Hulk and give a great performance. He ended up being my favorite character.  Having said that they have yet to make a Hulk movie starring Mark Ruffalo and so I await that one…

Top Five rating. Sometimes you just have to go see those blockbuster movies. This one is worth the ticket price.

Safe House (2012)

Written by David Guggenheim
Directed by Daniel Espinosa
Starring Ryan Reynolds and Denzel Washington

Safe House was an interesting film to watch. It starts out with a rather boring Ryan Reynolds working for the CIA as a Safe House manager. He waits for CIA agents to bring in suspects to interrogate. Mostly he sits around and waits all the time but one evening he gets a call and a new prisoner is brought to him who sets this story off.

Denzel brings his A game in this one, but what else would you expect from Denzel? He is the prisoner who ends up escaping from the CIA and the evil mod terrorist and Ryan Reynolds tries to bring him in. they end up going to countless chases and its one never ending pursue.

I was impressed with each chase / action sequence being an every increasing moment of suspense and excitement. I found myself clued to the screen the entire movie. The cinematography was well done. Nothing seemed out of place.

The characters were well developed and had good motivation through out most of the movie. At one point Reynolds character ends up shooting a policeman and that scene doesn’t seem true and unfortunately sticks out like a sour thumb. The film is good and has a great message and ending.

No rating. This film is a good one to see but ambiguous. I was left wondering what I was supposed to take a way from it. I enjoyed watching it for what it was…
